Water Cooled Portable Air Conditioners

Water cooled portable air conditioners are the most effective and efficient style of portable air conditioning. All that is required to operate the unit is the proper electrical power supply, a source of water, and a drain. The most common water sources used are; a standard sink with faucet, a slop sink found in a janitor closet, or a hose bib. A water hose kit, which is supplied with the unit, is used to connect the water source to the unit.

There are applications where a standard air cooled unit cannot be used because there is not adequate space to vent the condenser air, see air-cooled vs. water cooled portable air conditioners. In these situations a water cooled portable air conditioner can be used when air cooled cannot.

There are many reasons to use a water cooled portable air conditioner over an air cooled unit such as:

  • No negative air pressure caused by the ducting of condenser air.
  • Greater cooling capacity at a given electrical power i.e. a 5-Ton air cooled single phase unit requires a 50 amp service, whereas a 5-Ton water cooled unit requires only a 30 amp service. So if 5-Tons of cooling is needed and only 30 amps are available then a water cooled is an easy choice.
  • A water cooled portable air conditioner is best in areas with high ambient temperatures. Since a water-cooled unit uses water rather than the surrounding ambient air to cool the condenser, a water cooled unit can be located in extremely hot areas that are above the maximum operating temperature range for an air cooled unit.
